An enlarged prostate is caused by an imbalance of hormones, in particular the over-production of the DHT hormone. It is this hormone that makes the prostate swell up.
By slowing down the production of DHT, Proscar will gradually allow the swollen gland to shrink. It will take several months, or even a year, before the full benefits kick in, so be patient. In the early stages of your treatment with Proscar, your interest in having sex may decline, or you might have other sexual problems.
One very important fact to know about Proscar is that the main ingredient, finasteride, can interfere with the growth of an unborn male baby’s sexual organs. Therefore if your partner is pregnant, take extreme care that she does not touch or inhale any contents of a cracked or broken tablet.
